Crown lengthening surgery is a procedure that is recommended to increase the height of the tooth in the mouth by reducing the height of the gum tissue. It is usually recommended to prepare the tooth to receive a restoration, a new crown or to make your teeth appear taller.
If your tooth is decayed or broken below the gum line, your dentist may have referred you to Dr. Reidy for this procedure.
Generally, your body does not like foreign material such as a filling or crown material below the gums. It reacts with inflammation and swelling. In order to prevent this, a small amount of gum tissue is removed to expose more of the tooth. This will allow the restoration or crown to be placed without going under or irritating the gum tissue.
Crown lengthening surgery may also be done to remove gum tissue that has overgrown, covering the crown of the teeth.
The surgery involves making an incision around the affected areas and re-contouring the soft tissue to the desired level. This will uncover the crown portion of the tooth, allowing more to be seen in the mouth.
